“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else's life. Don’t be trapped by dogma- which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

A Hopeful Future

Each of us can find a way to transform a painful past into a hopeful future. We can develop compassion for others and compassion for ourselves. We can tell a new story of ourselves. The new story admits that “yes, I have caused pain and suffering.” The new story also recognizes that “the harm I have caused in the past is not who I am today.”

Self-forgiveness is truly at the core of peacemaking. The more we create peace in our heart, the more we can create peace in our world.

With Love,

DRC AND THE GREAT LAKES 2014 - 2016

2014 sees us begin a three-year programme to promote peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the countries of the Great Lakes Region of Africa thanks to the generous support of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation.  War has been raging in the DRC for twenty years. More lives have been lost here than in any conflict since WW2; it is the world’s forgotten conflict.

But as we witnessed in
Afghanistan
, peace for one day in the DRC is possible...

Our goal is to encourage all parties in the DRC to stand together in the name of peace on 21 September. We hope to raise the level of awareness of, and respect for Peace Day, so as to generate a significant reduction of violence across the country on the day by 2016 at the latest, and allow much needed humanitarian access to reach people caught in the cross fire. Just as important, however, is the way in which a day of peace could help change the perception of what is possible in the DRC, particularly amongst a younger generation who have known only war.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?

There are two things you can do. Firstly, you can show your support for Peace Day by organizing some kind of activity at home, in school, at work or in your local community on Sunday 21 September 2014, and telling us about it. This can be as simple as bringing friends together for a meal, or as ambitious as putting on an event - for example music, sport, dance, art, or anything you’re passionate about.

Secondly, you can help spread the word and be part of the campaign to reach 1.5 billion people this year. Re-post our journey on Facebook, follow and re-tweet @jeremygilley and email your network to ask them to get involved. If you’re part of a business or an educational establishment,
email us to find out specific ways you can help.

It’s so exciting to see so much activity starting to take shape. To make sure we can capture all of these wonderful plans, here’s the brand new 2014 Activities Form. By telling us what you have lined up you are inspiring others to take action on Peace Day around the world.

So, here is a quick update on some key developments for 2014:

  • The Great Lakes Peace Campaign goes from strength to strength. After recent calls with UN SESG Mary Robinson’s team, One UN Rwanda and UNICEF Burundi, awareness of the campaign is spreading throughout the GLR. To find out about the objectives and aspirations of this campaign please read and share our Statement of Purpose. Generously making this project possible is the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, whose work in the region we have showcased in this new film, which you can view here.

  • Last week I was privileged to meet British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg with Richard Reed, Co-founder of Innocent Drinks. It was fantastic to receive Mr. Clegg’s backing for what we are doing both globally and in the DRC and GLR.

  • It is brilliant to see so much enthusiasm to get involved in our football and dance initiatives. We’ve also launched a new flyer to promote Set for Peace, our DJ initiative, ahead of the International Music Summit in Ibiza later this month.

With 4 months to go, now’s the time to start planning for Peace Day 2014.

If we haven’t heard from you already, we look forward to hearing your plans for Peace Day!

In peace,

Jeremy Gilley
