NYLC DC PEACE WEEK 2014 Team

A Casady Teen Reflects on Peace Week 2014

Whereas I was not able to participate in quite the strength that I would have originally liked to, this year's Peace Week turned out exponentially better than last year's, and involved a significantly larger portion of our Casady Community doing acts of kindness, compassion, and service.

The Upper School managed to make roughly 1,000 pinwheels and raised $1,000 for Pepper's Ranch, a non-profit organization focused on getting orphaned foster kids out of the Oklahoma Foster System and house them until they are able to find a "forever home". In contrast to last year where the entire Upper Division only managed to make a few  pinwheels. I am happy that I was able to go with Mrs. Clay to Pepper's Ranch this summer and organize this and this worked out. Mrs. Crossno was instrumental in organizing a vast amount of the pinwheels being made by utilizing her freshman English classes.  Two UD Spanish teachers and the whole MD language department as well as all the Lower Division and the Primary also made pinwheels for peace.

From what I could see, Claire's peace art advocacy project was a big hit with the lower schoolers, who made benches where to sit when in need of a peaceful moment and Cathy's connection's to peace through sports worked out well at the Matt Terry Memorial Softball fundraiser.

Unfortunately, due to bad weather earlier in the day, Miranda's picture of school wide unity-4-peace ended up being just of the Upper School, but now we know how we can better situate the circumstances of such an activity should we want to re-create a similar activity again in the future.

Johnny and my presentation in Chapel featuring advocacy for Peace One Day and the Compassion Games through videos was alright, but moving forward I think we as a group realized the importance in planning ahead.

We were also fortunate enough to Skype with the Education Ambassador of Peace One Day, John Harrington, who was very complimentary about what we were doing, but I wished we had discussed more of what we could do to have an impact on a larger scale, and maybe we can explore that as a possible avenue for next year.

I  truly believe what made this year's 11 Days of Global Unity more cohesive and doable was the amount of work and time-We (The Peace Team-Johnny, Miranda, Cathy Claire/I/Mrs Clay) invested during the summer.

Thankfully, Mrs. Clay and Youth Lead adults-Mr. Noel Jacobs- and Casady YAC/Youth LEAD member, Mallory W.- were able to attend the Day for Kids at the Boys and Girls Club on Saturday the 20th.  They were able to uphold our commitment to them and provided a diversity of ways of stating peace and kindness in the different languages represented at the Interfaith Alliance Foundation and the tapestry of cultural diversity of teens in YLOKCasady.  The Casady Service-Learning Program provided materials and volunteers to empower participants to leave their "Vision of Peace."

Participants and volunteers who stopped at our booth also took a seedling to plant in their community on the International Day of Peace, September 21.  300 seedlings were given away.  The seedlings were donated by the Oklahoma Department of Forestry. The goal of seedling planting is to raise awareness of the international initiative facilitated by the ENO Programme Online to plant 100 million trees by 2017.

Unfortunately, due to debate tournaments, I missed the Boys and Girls Club event as well as the Youth LEAD OKC lock-in training at Camp Fire USA where a diverse group of teens learned how to facilitate connecting ice breakers and organize and plan and implement a culturally enhancing project for Positive Tomorrow, our local school for homeless children.  The project will take place on December 18, 2014.

Mrs. Clay and my Recipeace meal initiative with restaurants did not pan out quite as we had hoped on 9/21/2014, but we did meet a very receptive bunch of people, and found out that small business are the only ones realistically able to partner with us as we move forward. We are thankful to our school chef for making a soup from the recipeace website and helping us raise awareness of bringing peace to our tables.

I also missed the Conference of Churches Youth Tour on Sunday the 21st, which I had planned to facilitate and, amazingly 300 people showed up, where we had initially predicted only 180.  The Casady Service-Learning Program was also connected to a celebration of Peace Day the evening of the 21st of September when peace organizations collaborating with the United Nations of Greater Oklahoma City Chapter respectfully observed the day through sharing peace building stories at the Oklahoma City University, Student Center, Grand Hall.  Hopefully next year I am able to organize my debate schedule around Peace Week and am able to facilitate the Interfaith Youth Tour and take on a more direct role in Peace Week vs the more indirect role that I had this year.

During this experience with Peace Week, and all the planning it entailed, I learnt how to proposition various businesses, facilitate meetings outside of Youth LEAD, and for that I am truly grateful. As we look to improving Peace Week, continue to progress, and add to Peace Week here at Casady, and awareness of the International Day of Peace on a Global front; I can smile knowing that even though it was not as spectacular as I could have imagined, it was successfully accomplished, and I can move forward knowing that my voice, and the visions of my peers, invested in this week, were heard by people with microphones such as the Compassion Games International, the Shinnyo-en Foundation, and Peace One Day.

September 11-September 21(International Day of Peace);  PEACE WEEK @ Casady School11 Days of Global Unity

Upon their return from the National Service Learning Conference in Washington D.C. where the teen team  showcased Peace Week 2013 @ Casady School, the teen peace makers planned and implemented personal initiatives during the 11 Days of Global Unity 2014.

September 8:

Johnny L. promoted Peace One Day and called for intentional acts of kindness, compassion and service during the 11 Days of Global Unity 9/11-921.  He presented the following video @ chapel.

September 10:

The Peace Team had a Skype session with the Peace One Day Education Ambassador who listened to team's personal initiatives and suggested to document actions taken during Peace Week and Peace Day.

September 11

Ananya B. and Johnny L. presented a video to promote unity and advocate acts of kindness compassion and service during the week.  The goal was to raise awareness of the 11 Days of Global Unity, Peace Day, and the Compassion Games.

Johnny L. also promoted in chapel planting of seedlings donated by the Oklahoma Department of Forestry on 9/21/2014 to connect to the ENO Online Programme Initiative of planting 100 million trees by 9/21/2017.

In the month of June, Ananya  B. connected to the the incentive of $ 1 per pinwheel made for Pepper's Ranch during Peace Week.  Casady delivered over 1000 pinwheels to Pepper's Ranch. Pepper's ranch is centered on taking orphaned foster children out of the OKC foster system and housing them until they find forever families or are adopted. They currently house 75 children, and are looking to expand their numbers to 100.

500 pinwheels were made by high school students. Pinwheels were made by Spanish I and II classes, led by Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Clay and the freshman English classes led by Mrs. Crossno and Mrs. Finley.

Other pinwheels were made by the MD language classes, facilitated by Mrs. Robertson, Mr. Chaverri,  Miss Castro and Mr. Pardue.

80 pinwheels were made at Summer by the Lake classes facilitated by Peace Team members Johnny L. Ananya B. Turner W. and Carmen Clay, Service-Learning Director.  The children watched on a Paper Crane, Tomoko's Adventure and a brief trailer of Peace One Day after and before making pinwheels.  In the summer, in addition to Summer By the Lake pinwheel making, Peace Team members, Johnny L. and Turner W. made and donated over 200 pencil pinwheels and raised awareness of the International Day of Peace at a family fair sponsored by the Single Parents Network.  After displaying pinwheels at peace signs in front of chapel, the pinwheels were collected and a representative from Pepper's Ranch took them to be displayed at the Ranch.

Supplies for the pinwheels were donated by the English and foreign language programs, as well a huge donation from a member of the sophomore class.

September 17, 2014:  Woman's Day

Ananya B. introduced the Chapel Peace Week guest speaker on Women's Day, Mr. Drew Edmondson.  Mr. Edmondson, a former Attorney General of the State of Oklahoma, served in that office from January 1995 to January 2011.  During that time his duties surrounded the Murrah Building bombing in April 1995, to reform of the death penalty appeals process, to litigation against the tobacco companies and protection of Oklahoma’s waters.  He served on the negotiating committee of eight attorneys general which concluded the tobacco lawsuit with the largest civil settlement in history.  He was instrumental in establishing the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust and the Oklahoma Education Technology Trust, both of which will provide funding for health and education initiatives in perpetuity.

His prior service included ten years as the elected District Attorney in Muskogee, Oklahoma, a term in the Oklahoma Legislature, service in the United States Navy, with duty in Vietnam, and some time teaching speech and debate at Muskogee High School.

Mr. Edmonson spoke on Women's Day about leadership, service and inspirational Oklahoma women who made a difference in our state.

September 18th Human Rights Day

Ananya promoted Recipeace-Serving Peace at our tables on 9/21/2014 at different restaurants during the summer. She was not successful with local restaurants, but our Sage Dinning Program under the leadership of Chef Kevin had a Recipeace soup at Calvert on 9/18 and promoted Recipeace with signs at every table at the Casady dinning hall.

Primary and Lower Division celebrated International Day of Peace by blessing and planting pinwheels on the 18th because the 19th was teacher-parent conference day.

CASADY SCHOOLS PINWHEELS ON 9/19 FREEDOM DAY

September 20th: Disarmament Day

Ananya B. helped organize a Day for Kids on 9/20 @ Boys and Girls Club.  She was unable to participate due to conflict with her debate team schedule.  Casady Service-Learning in collaboration with the Interfaith Alliance of Oklahoma City, YAC (Youth Acting in the Community), Youth LEAD OKC (Leaders Engaging Across Differences), the Oklahoma Forestry Department (donated seedling to plant on 9/21) and Oklahoma City University Volunteers had a booth were the Interfaith Alliance showed participants how to write peace in several languages and peace symbols in different religions. Casady Service-Learning raise awareness of the International Day of Peace asking participants to leave their visions of peace which were turned into a collage that will be delivered to Boys and Girls Club on 9/21/2015.   Participants were also encouraged to take a seedling to plant on 9/21/2014.

September 21: International Day of Peace

Peace Team members, Johnny and Turner attended the Youth LEAD OKC lock-in Experience on 9/20 and 9/21 @ Camp Fire USA.  Other Casady students who participated in the lock-in were Sidney J., Taylor B., Mallory W, Pierce S., Gabrielle M,  Jack and Ross. The lock-in's goal was to train YLOKC on how to facilitate ice-breakers as a rock start and create a project to be implemented as a team in 2014.  The resulting project is a cultural fest for Positive Tomorrows, a local school for homeless children.  Ananya is part of the planning team of Youth LEAD but was unable to participate because the date of the lock-in was changed and conflicted with her debate schedule.  Ananya will be facilitating the Indian booth at Positive Tomorrows on 12/19/2014.

Miranda T.'s personal Peace Week initiative was to promote an aerial picture symbolizing United-4-Peace with everyone wearing a Peace t-shirt. Weather did not allow the picture to take place.  Only UD had an attempt.  We think it is doable, but it will take about 30 minutes to take such a picture.

Regarding the Peace Team T-shirt, it was tabled until next year because of lack of resources to fund a t-shirt for everyone at school. Gracie P. joined the team with a design from the Internet and Cathy Z. designed an original one.  In 2015, we have at least two designs to choose from.

Cathy Z. personal initiative during Peace Week was to raise awareness of peace day through sports. Cathy and a group of friends volunteered at a softball fundraising tournament as part of the compassion games during the 11 Days of Global Unity.

Claire's personal initiative was promotion of awareness of Peace Week through the visual arts.  Mrs. Thompson's  LD classes worked on a peaceful friendship chair and visions of peace during 9/11-9/12.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS ON INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE

Mrs. Clay aimed to raise awareness of the Casady Peace Team, Peace Day and connect Peace Week to the Compassion Games during the 11 Days of Global Unity (9/11-9/21) in all divisions and the greater Oklahoma City community.  In collaboration with Peace Team member, Ananya, Mrs. Clay helped organize the reflective component of the Oklahoma Conference of Churches Interfaith Youth Tour.  Ananya was scheduled to facilitate the reflective piece, but delays returning from a debate tournament in Dallas did not allow her to complete her commitment.  The tour had an expected attendance of 180 teens.  We were surprised when 300 participated.

The International Day of Peace 2014 ended with a lovely observance of the day at OCU, The Great Hall of the University Center, Oklahoma City University
2501 N. Blackwelder, OKC.

From UN Blog
This free program was co-sponsored by Joy Mennonite Church, the Oikos Scholars program of Oklahoma City University, the Center for Conscience in Action, the Peace House, the Oklahoma City group of Pax Christi USA, the Respect Diversity Foundation, and by the Oklahoma City chapter of the United Nations Association of the USA.

The program started with Dr. Imad Enchassi

“Sometimes I think God exposed me
to so much hatred and violence.
so that I can be a voice for love and peace.”

Dr. Enchassi is a renowned voice for peace, interfaith understanding, and religious tolerance in Oklahoma and beyond. He is the recipient of the 2014 Humanitarian Award of the Oklahoma Center for Community and Justice, the "Dialogue Award" of the Dialogue Institute of the Southwest, the Community Service Award of the Interfaith Alliance of Oklahoma, and in 2011 he was recognized by The Oklahoman newspaper as a Visionary in Religious and Education Outreach.

Beyond these many accolades, Dr. Enchassi is a gracious man of gentle humor. He inspires confidence with his knowledge and ability to communicate. He is a highly sought-after speaker.

The son of a Palestinian father and a Syrian mother, Dr. Enchassi grew up in the Palestinian refugee camps of Beirut, Lebanon.

“I am a third generation refugee," Enchassi recently told The Red Dirt Report. His father was Palestinian, his mother from Syria.

As a teenager, Enchassi and his six siblings were in the Sabra and Shatila camps when they came under attack from the fighters of a Christian militia group. It was September, 1982.

It wasn't just an attack. It was amassacre. More than 30 years later, the world can't forget the deaths of so many unarmed civilians. Estimates of the death toll range from 762 to 3,500. The UN General Assemblycondemned the slaughter, which stretched over the course of 3 days.

As related by The Oklahoman newspaper: "Enchassi said surviving the massacre made him think long and hard about the power and destructiveness of hatred."

“I knew that hatred had to stop,” he said.

After surviving the massacre, at the age of seventeen, Enchassi moved to America, beginning a long journey of education. He studied business management at South Plains College in Texas as well as at Southern Nazarene University in Bethany. Eventually, he earned a masters in management from the University of Phoenix.

“Making it to the U.S. was a dream,” Enchassi told the Red Dirt Report. For nearly two decades, he excelled in the restaurant industry as a regional manager and consultant.

For the last ten years, Dr. Enchassi has focused his life on building up the Islamic community in Greater Oklahoma City. He succeeded in creating the first accredited Islamic school in Oklahoma City. During that time he also became the founder, Imam and President of the Islamic Society of Greater Oklahoma ‘City (ISGOC).

ISGOC has grown to become the largest Islamic Center in the state of Oklahoma.

Dr. Enchassi and his wife, Judith, are the proud parents of five children.

The program continued with the introduction of Kristen Swartley and El Sistema

El Sistema is an international movement for music education -- "The System," in English.

It came to Oklahoma about a year ago, the result of a commitment by Phil and Cathy Busey, St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, and the Wanda L. Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University.

Kristen Swartley, a teaching
artist for El Sistema Oklahoma,
will introduce the orchestra's
jazz combo at our Peace Day
celebration on Sept. 21.
The first concert of the El Sistema Oklahoma youth orchestra was last October. One hundred children in grades 3 through 6 delivereda rousing performance in downtown Oklahoma City. It included young people from several Oklahoma City elementary schools, including Sequoyah, Putnam Heights, Cleveland, Linwood, Gatewood and Kaiser.

As a mission project of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in partnership with the Wanda L Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University, El Sistema Oklahoma benefits from a variety of community partners for their success.  In addition to St. Luke’s and OCU, Trinity International Baptist Church provides classrooms for after-school practice sessions.

“We are honored to serve our community by providing a place where children and their families can feel an abundance of grace, hope and joy on a daily basis.  When children see that they can be good at something and be part of something great, it has the power to change the trajectory of their lives,” says Robyn Hilger, Executive Director of El Sistema Oklahoma.

For your viewing pleasure: Here's a 30-second clip
of El Sistema Oklahoma's full orchestra performing
Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" on YouTube.

The program introduced the jazz combo will be Kristen Swartley, a teaching artist for El Sistema Oklahoma.

Ms. Swartley talked briefly about her experience living and working in Bolivia in 2009 and 2010. It was there that she heard about El Sistema and realized its potential for youth development and social engagement.

Appearing with Ms. Swartley will be Robyn Hilger, the executive director of El Sistema Oklahoma.

Children who study music don't just get better at playing

El Sistema started in 1975, inspired by a Venezuelan economist and musician, José Antonio Abreu.

Abreu believes that an orchestra represents the ideal society, and the sooner a child is nurtured in that environment, the better for all.

We are fortunate that we have visionary leaders in our community who are willing to invest in the education of our young people in this way.

And, we are proud to showcase the El Sistema Oklahoma Jazz Combo as part of our celebration of the International Day of Peace.

"Music has to be recognized as an agent of social development, in the highest sense because it transmits the highest values - solidarity, harmony, mutual compassion. And it has the ability to unite an entire community, and to express sublime feelings"

The program ended with  Albert Gray Eagle

A noted flute artist, story teller, and creative writer.   Mr. Gray Eagle is a teaching artist for the Oklahoma Arts Council. If you have children in an Oklahoma school, they may have participated in a workshop with him. He is frequently invited to enrich the classroom experience of children in Oklahoma City and beyond.

As described on the Arts Council's website:

"Residencies with Gray Eagle may include the art of flute making and playing of the instrument while building on an understanding of history relevant to the Native American. He may provide storytelling for both children and adults that offer a perspective and philosophy of Native American culture of the past and present. Through his artistic talents and gentle nature for teaching, participants will be guided to develop their creative and artistic selves. As a U.S. Army veteran, Gray Eagle performs frequently for veterans events."

"Tuneful tradition: Albert Gray Eagle's
flute music entertains, teaches"
by Brandy McDonnell

Mr. Gray Eagle hasn't always been a teaching artist. In 1973, at the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Army. After completing his military service, he worked for a dozen years as an office manager. Then another 12 years as a truck driver.

But the flute has been his passion for many years.

Born in Colorado, Mr. Gray Eagle grew up in a Native American family. He is of Oglala,Cheyenne and Apache descent.

As a teen, Gray Eagle's great-uncle John Eagle showed him how to make and play flutes.

"He told me God gives you all kinds of gifts inside your soul, and you'll learn to respect them when you unwrap them. And you won't know what they are until you unwrap them," he said.

Beyond his workshops in Oklahoma schools, Gray Eagle has been a popular entertainer at the Red Earth Festival, at the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival, and at other public and private performances.

Gray Eagle has won praise from educators across the state. Mike Woods, superintendent of Fargo Public Schools, has said:

"He exemplifies the good of Oklahoma, the heritage we have here, the quality of the people we have here."

Albert Gray Eagle's voice and flute.

Gray Eagle often performs with his friend and collaborator, Matheson Hamilton, a story teller and creative writer.

At his website, Gray Eagle explains his motivation for teaching:

"With the air we breathe we choose whether to say something nice to someone or to be mean and create hate. We would rather have the people we teach create an instrument and use the air they breath to create music; allowing them to express who they are as individuals through their artwork, and hopefully through this introduction, give them the opportunity to express themselves through a universal language."

Through his workshops, Gray Eagle inspires his students -- young and old, alike -- to:

• Develop imagination and craftsmanship
• Explore cultural heritage
• Learn patience and respect for others
• Learn to work together as a team

Interfaith Youth Tour 2014:  Casady School Peace Team- YAC-Youth LEAD OKCasady - Oklahoma Conference of Churches connected

Dr. Tabernee, CEO of the Oklahoma Conference of Churches, spoke to a member of the Peace Team regarding facilitation of a pre and post reflection of the Interfaith Youth Tour 2014.
The post-it notes reflection will take place at the first and last site.  The reflection will be facilitated by teens from the Casady Peace Team, YLOKCasady YAC.  The reflection will consist of two questions.

a. What three things do you ALREDY  know about ?
Hinduism, Christianity, Islam

b. What three things did you learn during the tour about?
Hinduism, Christianity, Islam

OCC will provide all the supplies for the reflection.  OCC is also considering placing a copy of the pinwheels for peace template in each of the participants bags to give them an opportunity to make one when back at home. raising greater awareness of the International Day of Peace.  The pinwheel then becomes a symbol of "unity in diversity" as Dr.Acharya Vedala from the Hindu Temple commented.

The summer assignment was to investigate the first site, where the tour will begin and the pre-reflection will take place.  OCC is also helping raise awareness that September 21 is International Day of Peace by granting permission to the Peace Team to offer the opportunity to facilitate pinwheel making to their youth groups during July, August, or the first week in September.  Pinwheels made by youth groups will decorate the parking lots of the temple, church, and mosque to greet the busses of teens attending as an unobtrusive advocate of the International Day of Peace.

Investigating the site of the first tour- Hindu Temple on Coltrane

Members of the peace team visited with Dr. Acharya Vedala (405-326-1543, 405-285-5439) and were encouraged by his welcoming personality and desire to collaborate with pinwheel making.  They spent an hour with Dr. Vemala who built the temple, is its spiritual leader, and teaches Hindu philosophy and sand script at the University of Central Oklahoma.

Pinwheel Making at Hindu Temple during the summer and/or before 9/21:  Mrs. Clay and available members of the peace team during the summer will facilitate pinwheel making at the temple with supplies provided by the temple.  Mrs. Clay will follow-up with Dr. Vemala to set-up an appointment to work with the 75 children who attend the temple education classes.

We discovered that the color blue is the color of peace in Hinduism.  "Blue like the sky," Dr. Vemala stated.  Pinwheels made by temple children and teens will be planted on 9/21 on areas welcoming the Interfaith Youth Tour busses.

Registration and Pre-Reflection: Will take place at the house adjacent to the temple.  Children have religion classes until 12:30.  Then, the rooms are available for registration and "pre-reflection post-it note activity" and pinwheel  demonstration for early arrivals.

Day of Tour
The visit to the Hindu Temple will start at 1:00 PM and will last 50 minutes.  Teens will have an explanation of the deities and then Dr. Vedala will lecture and open the forum for questions.

A Note from Kelly, the House Mother:
painted-peace-logoIt is always a pleasure when you and your students are here.  Anytime you need me for anything please let me know.  They did a great job, the families told me how good the food was and some are having leftovers for lunch right now.

I also think we make a great clean up crew, you work like I do with the lets get this done attitude.  I appreciate the drive you have to help your students succeed.

After the Meal Peace Week Conversation

Cooking for 30 people, serving and cleaning up did not allow time to work on the Peace Week agenda.

The team will revise the draft of the citywide flyer and make suggestions for the high school.  They will also check the emerging plan for the week and take personal ownership of a day facilitating an activity or a chapel speech.  The team still awaits the draft of the peace week t-shirt from Gracie.  Sireene from YLOKC is working on an original design for a citywide t-shirt.

1. Peace Week 2014: Peace Team members facilitation

a. Members will provide commitments via e-mail to Mrs. Clay.

b. Mrs. Clay suggested asking Casady Clubs to sponsor a theme of the week, the theme connected to their vision, mission, and purpose to make peace week part of the culture of the school.

Commitments as of 7/9/2014
Turner will connect Peace Week to the Spanish and Drama clubs, both areas of his personal interest. Ideas to promote to language clubs:  Recipeace meeting, good deeds related to language building, pinwheel and paper crane for peace making.

Johnny is making a list of all clubs, sponsors and teen leadership to be shared with freshmen, new teachers and new students.  Please help his efforts relating information about clubs you know pertinent information.  Johnny's clubs link forthcoming!

Mrs. Clay will connect Peace Week to Casady educators, chapel, and the OKC community.
Ideas Mrs. Clay will suggest to teachers:
Chapel performances during Peace Week (Choir, Dance, Orchestra, Theater).  Pinwheel and paper cranes for peace at all division ($ 1 to Pepper's Ranch per pinwheel made by Pepper's Ranch donor).
1,000 cranes sent to Hiroshima Museum.  the paper cranes will be connected to the  Shinnyo-en Foundation Six Billion Paths to Peace
Painted Peace Art with Artist in Residence, Thelma Gomez for Spanish Club.
Your own idea connecting your subject area to peace education.

2. Peace Week 2014 Flyer and T-shirt  The team is waiting for Gracie to send the draft for group discussion and approval.  Sireene stated that she will provide a design for a citywide t-shirt.

Mrs. Clay made a save the date flyer promoting Compassion Relay Games during Peace Week.  A save the date flyer for the week needed for youth by youth!  Who will be taking this task?

The team ended the clean-up at 7:30 PM.  We were unable to attend the UN OKC IDP meeting at the Joy of Mennonite Church.  We sent the Compassion Relay flyer draft-still without teen input- to them.

Raising Awareness of Recipeace @ local restaurants

Recipeace Promotion

Peace Team Teens promoted "Serve Peace at your table on 9/21 International Day of peace." at a variety of OKC restaurants.  The goal of the visits were to inform restaurants about http://recipeaceday.org/ in hope that they would advocate awareness of Peace Day(9/21) which is mostly unknown in our city.

After visiting several restaurants, members of the peace team visited Super Cao Nguyen where they received a donation of $185 worth of Ramune for YLOKC summer recruitment.  Super Cao Nguyen graciously became the first business to sponsor Peace Week @ Casady School.  The owners of Super Cao suggested approaching the Oklahoma Restaurant Association to promote Recipeace in OKC

E-mail Summer Communication with Peace Team

Dear Peace Team:

Yesterday was a wonderful day for Peace Week 2014.

a. Super Cao owners gave us ideas to promote peace week with the Restaurant Association of Oklahoma and gave us permission to use their logo in our t-shirt as our first  Peace Week sponsor.  They will provide snacks at cost with donations from time to time when they want to market new products to the OKC community for YAC meetings.   We need to add their logo to our t-shirt.  Ananya suggested on the sleeve.  Ananya then proceeded to request a special price for Ramune for YLOKC recruitment activity.  She received way more than she expected.  If you want to explore, be at the Myriad Gardens on July 9th before the free showing of Frozen at the Children's Garden. Ananya and Johnny will be there giving away Ramune and business cards with YLOKC information!

b. A primitive art artist from Nicaragua will help us with "Peace Week Painted Peace"  for a small stipend provided by Casady Service-Learning budget.  We will ask interested students to place painted peace art in a silent auction with proceeds going to Peace Week expenses and YAC service projects.

c. I am excited about seeing most of you at OKC Kids Korral https://www.tobykeithfoundation.org/, on June 8th from 4:30 to 6:30. We will serve dinner at  6:00, but we need to clean-up and have a tour of the facility.  Fun, Food and Friends with a Cause!!!  As we cook," whatever you wish to cook" for the children undergoing cancer treatment and their families, there are two items in my agenda:
1.  What each one of you is willing to facilitate for PEACE WEEK
2. PEACE WEEK T-shirt/Flyer
I have a meeting at COVA (Central OK Volunteer Administrators) in the morning of the 8th and I need a flyer, so youth input to the attached revised save the date flyer is appreciated.

For the OKC Kids Koral, meal you need to decide what you are going to cook.  Send your "Recipeace" to me, TODAY!!! for OKC Kids Korral to approve the menu and place it in the calendar.  Please state what utensils and pots you will need to cook.  Joanna, from OKC kids Korral will let us know what needs to be brought and what they already have in their well stocked kitchen.  Regarding the ingredients of your the dish, when your recipe is approved, you will need to bring the ingredients not available at the OKC Kids Korral.  You can donate the ingredients or bring your receipt for SL to reimburse you.  We will know the number of people we will cook for on Monday, but at minimum will be 15 which includes dinner for us.  One of the chefs from Casady might be joining us, if his schedule permits it.
May I suggest to have
Appetizer or salad
Main Course
Dessert
Drink
Miranda:  We will miss you, but hope you will be having an incredible time on your vacation.  To see pictures visit http://casadypeaceweek.blogspot.com/p/nylc.html.  Please let me know a day when we can take a morning walk and talk about what you want to facilitate for Peace Week.

d. NEWS FLASH
Ananya and I visited with the CEO of Peppers Ranch https://www.peppersranch.com/.  Her 75 kids will make pinwheels for peace and place them around their beautiful lake, weather permitting on 9/21.  To help motivate UD students to make pinwheels, she will find a donor who will donate $1 to Pepper's Ranch for every pinwheel made by Casady students.  They are trying to build another house to get more kids away from DHA and into the kinder foster care environment of Pepper's Ranch.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Casady Peace Team:

News 1:  IPYC Korea:  Your participation in the Peace Team has opened the IPYC Korea opportunity for Casady students and faculty.  Deadline for commitment ASAP, if financial assistance requested.

Please see the IPYC Korea information and let me know if you are interested.  I will not be attending.  We will need an adult involved in Peace Week as a supporter or helper willing to miss a week of school to attend the summit.  Ananya thought  Mrs. Hubbert or Mrs. Crossno.  I thought Father Blizzard or Mr. Crofton.  I am going to talk to Mr. Sheldon and Dr. Powell, our new Principal =) to see what administrative hurdles the possible IPYC Peace Summit team will have to overcome to attend.  All expenses at the summit are paid by IPYC Korea.  If you do not apply for financial assistance for the ticket, Ananya investigated the cost in direct flight with American Airlines from Dallas is about $1,500.

News 2: Peace Week T-shirts: We welcome Gracie Pitman to the Peace Team.  Ananya and Gracie spent 30 minutes at my office looking over Gracie's extensive research and possibilities for the Peace Week t-shirt.  Gracie will send a "draft proposal" so everyone add personal perspective.  Casady Service-Learning will purchase 20 T-shirts.  7 for the current members of the peace team and the rest to give away in a ruffle for people participating in the Compassion Games Relay, the Interfaith Youth Tour, the Food Bank Volunteering, Youth LEAD OKC Invitational Retreat at Camp Classen, and the Peace Kids Fair at Boys and Girls Club.  Those are the Peace Week areas sponsored by the Service-Learning Program.

The Peace Week  t-shirt should please all of you because it will represent you as a team and the mission, vision and purpose of peace week 2014.  The t-shirt will be sold, unless we can find sponsors, even to defray the cost.  I will approach the Shinnyo-en foundation with a request of funding for the PD t-shirts because for the past five years, the PD has had the strongest commitment to peace week.  Global peace begins in the classroom is their Montesorri vision.

The t-shirts will be made available to all divisions and the design has to be appropriate for all levels.   Thank you Gracie for taking the initiative and starting the brainstorming process.  The t-shirt design should be finalized by August 1.

Where to print the t-shirts?  The Kerr's have printed t-shirts for service learning from $2-$7 per t-shirt depending on the logo.  If you know of printing companies that will give us a good deal and maybe sponsor the week, please let Gracie and Ananya know.

News 3:  Recipeace http://recipeaceday.org/ Brunch and Interfaith Youth Tour http://okchurches.org/interfaith-youth-tour/ ($15 per person) on 9/21:

Recipeace brunch:  Ananya made a flyer and Ananya and Johnny revisited restaurants, but we have NO commitments as of yesterday.  She also visited with Sage and I will follow-up today about SAGE participation on RECIPEACE and PEACE WEEK.  I am also meeting the an artist from Nicaragua to see how she could connect an art activity to the Recipeace Brunch.  What is the Recipeace Brunch? Interested students will have brunch at a sponsoring restaurant to end our peace week effort. The brunch will start at 11:00.   Everyone will pay for their own food, but there will be a Peace Week t-shirt give away for people attending. We hope to have an inspiration speaker and/or a fun activity. The recipeace brunch is looking for peace team member to welcome, facilitate and end the IDP Brunch.   Interested? Contact Ananya or Mrs. Clay

Interfaith Youth Tour on International Day of Peace:  Ananya also met with Dr. Tabernee, CEO of Oklahoma Conference of Churches.  She will facilitate the pre and post reflection with giant and small  Post-it notes.  Before she leaves OKC for the rest of the summer, Ananya will visit the Hindu temple to check on logistics, encourage the administrations to involved teens in the presentation, encourage them to make pinwheels or another symbol of peace (paper cranes) to demonstrate their connection to raising awareness of the International Day of Peace 9/21, and find best place to have registration and pre-tour reflection.  Dr. Tabernee will do the same for the mosque where the tour will end.  Dr. Tabernee's office will provide the post-it notes and pens.  Ananya and I introduced Dr. Tabernee to Pinwheels for Peace http://www.pinwheelsforpeace.com/pinwheelsforpeace/home.html and Peace One Day: Faith Coalition http://www.peaceoneday.org/coalitions/faith-coalition.  Dr. Tabernee's office will send notification to their database about 9/21 being International Day of Peace.  It is up to us to make a flyer and invite participants to the Recipeace Brunch once all details are finalized.

National Volunteer Week and Global Youth Service Day @

Washington D.C. Cherry Blossoms Time

After the conference emerging project

Six Casady freshmen and two faculty members attended Monumental, the 2014 National Service-Learning Conference sponsored by the National Youth Leadership Council (NYLC) and Youth Service America (YSA).  Cyclones also participated in A Day at the Hill and the YSA Global Youth Day of Service in our nation's capital.

Mr. Jeff Bush, represented the third grade team showcasing the Lower Division award winning service-learning project, Fair Trade Chocolate

Casady freshmen Ananya B., Claire D., Cathy Z., Johnny L., Miranda T., Turner W., and Mrs. Carmen Clay, Service-Learning Director, showcased the after school care kindness and service advocacy through the arts project, Peace Stone Soup: Peace Week 2014: 11 Days of Global Unity - 9/11-9/21 International Day of Peace.  The purpose of the week was to raise awareness and promote random (intentional) acts of kindness and service in September 2013 which connected to the Casady service councils YAC and Youth LEADOKC initiatives throughout the year.

Turner, Claire, Miranda and Cathy represented the Casady service council YAC (Youth in Action in the Community). Ananya and Johnny, in addition to YAC, these Cyclones also shared their activities as members of a city wide cultural competency youth board founded by YAC Junior Chair Sidney J. Youth Lead OKC

Below, blog entries and photos by participating members of Monumental.

Emerging Project after the conference

I am trying to start a project that helps primarily Elementary students from low socio-economic background as well as those who may additional face a language barrier. I am in the process of applying for a grant to fund this, for some reason if the grant is not authorized I have contacted the Metropolitan Library in hopes of them donating some Children’s books, in order to launch the project till funds can be provided.

Investigation
Through some research I have found out that the Public School system stops teaching students reading Skills in the 3rd grade, so those who are behind by the 3rd grade are simple left behind. Without simple reading comprehension this inevitable leads to the student to always be behind creating a divide the achievement gap.

Connect-Building Collaborations with Curricular areas and community partners
My project calls for a collaboration with our language department, in particular the Spanish department. I personally love books, and I would like to share that love of books. In some ways this proposal can be viewed as a supplementary curriculum. I would like to start with phonetics, then move on to simple bilingual children’s books, whether they are actually bilingual or translated by hand to English and as students slowly get better by passing through levels based on reading comprehension, move on to harder books the amount of Spanish (the crutch) decreases.

I know through myself and my peers, students are more motivated when they get something out of it. So I propose a fake money system, for each level a student passes they get a “fictional dollar” (i haven’t come up with a catchy name yet). Once they accumulate a certain amount of dollars they can purchase small gifts from a store the better the prize the more dollars it costs. This teaches kids the value of saving and spending their own money as well as giving them incentive to pass reading levels.

Once a certain reading level is reached students will have an opportunity to write their own stories, whether they are fictional or based on their own lives, and I’d like theses students to send their stories in English to our lower division to share with our students, so they know from an early age that there is more out there than just Casady, and maybe in response some of our students will send stories of their own back to these students.

I have contacted the Principles from Bodine, Britton, Cesar Chavez, and Johnson Elementary schools. I thought It would be better to start with schools near us (Casady) and then branch out.

Funding for the Project
Let me know your thoughts and Ideas. Please keep in mind I am working with a deadline which is 11:59 PM ET on May 2. So if this project is to be started it needs to be sent, and have enough backing to be competitive with other grants in the region.  Grant refereed to is State Farm YAB Grant

Sunday, April 13: Final reflection, return home

Final Breakfast Reflection

Well, it’s a beautiful Sunday morning and we are off to head home back to our beloved OKC! This has been an absolute amazing experience, as I , along with the rest of the Peace Team, have gotten the opportunity to meet not only very influential people, but also new friends from all around the world, including Qatar and Taiwan! our day starts with waking up fairly early, checking out, and having one last nice meal before we head to the airport, even if breakfast was a little rushed 😉 I led the breakfast with a reflection on what were some things we could take away from this trip; some answers including presenting with confidence, making new friends, and taking leadership. This is definitely an experience I personally will never forget. And a HUGE thank you to Mrs. Clay! you are the best 😊

Saturday, April 12: Global Youth Service Day, Celebration meal

Claire stated, "Our group had a busy but fun-filled Saturday! In the morning, we took the subway and made our way down to the National Mall to participate in the Global Youth Service Day. There were many activities and showcases to see and do, including a showcase from our friends in Pennsylvania who talked about their project H20 hope.

There was also an opportunity to go and partake in the Cherry Blossom Festival around the Tidal Basin. The girls volunteered with the National Parks Service to clean up the park and pick up trash around the festival. After this experience, the girls took away a whole new appreciation for anyone who deals with sanitation!

After a quick parting message from Secretaries of the Interior and Education, our group made a trek up to Foggy Bottom around George Washington University to grab a bite to eat. After lunch, we went to the Holocaust Museum and made the most of our short, but thoughtful and reverent time there.

By this time in the day, we were getting a little bit tired, but we took another long walk through DC and the Japanese Cultural Festival on our long journey to dinner at the South African chain "Nandos." Of course, to celebrate the end of our trip, our hard work, and service-learning we went to Georgetown and got some tasty cupcakes at Sprinkles.

On Saturday, our group learned the importance of problem solving whether it be trying to change trash bags, trying to hail a taxi, or getting lost in a big city. We also took away a new understanding and appreciation for different professions like garbage men, and different cultures in the Japanese Cultural Festival, and the Holocaust Museum.

Throughout the duration of our trip, our group advocated for a more aware and accepting society, by participating in Saturday's activities and going to the different venues, our group really practiced what we preached, a thing that is so often said, but rarely done."

Closing Plenary: Arne Duncan

Arne Duncan (born November 6, 1964) is an American education administrator who has been United States Secretary of Education since 2009. Duncan previously served as CEO of the Chicago Public Schools.  Duncan was raised in Hyde Park, a Chicago neighborhood encompassing the University of Chicago. He is the son of Susan Goodrich (née Morton) and Starkey Davis Duncan, Jr. His father was a psychology professor at the university and his mother runs the Sue Duncan Children's Center, an after-school program primarily serving African-American youth in the nearby Kenwood neighborhood.  Duncan attended the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools[1] and later Harvard University, where he graduated magna cum laude in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in sociology. His senior thesis, for which he took a year's leave to do research in the Kenwood neighborhood, was entitled The values, aspirations and opportunities of the urban underclass.[2]

Ananya stated,  "This conference was an eye-opening experience. “Heights by great men reached and kept were not obtained by sudden flight, but rather while their companions slept they were toiling upwards in the night” -Longfellow. The people I met and spoke to were these people.

I was amazed and inspired by their stories, those little memories we cling to have more value than any amount of numbers and statistics can attempt to deduce when describing a person. I left more aware of the problems that plague not only our nation but us as a global community, but what I learnt was not to be discouraged, one person can make a difference, one life matters, the power of one. “From my rotting body flowers will grow, and I in them am immortal” -Edvard Munch. Selfish needs spew from greed, but to be selfless inspires true creativity in giving voicing something that will out live you, and that is your chance at immortality."

Today was showcase day and the first full day of conference presentations.  The kids and Mr. Bush were amazing. I am very proud of service-learning Cyclones We have not been able to figure out how to upload pictures from the IPAD yet.

We also had a tour of monuments by moonlight. Cathy reflected the group and she had the following thoughts about the day: " In the morning the first thing we did was set up our showcase. One thing we were all amazed to see is how our ideas, that we have been planning for a few months, came to life. After setting up we ate breakfast. Then came our first workshop, most of us were pretty confused, since this was our first conference, but most of the workshops were informative and interesting. What I liked was that there were so many choices of workshops so we can choose something that we are passionate about. Following our workshop we went to a plenary, where we heard many inspirational speakers including Sandra Day O'Connor, Arne Duncan, Cassandra Lin, and more. We all agreed that Cassandra was one of the most inspirational because she showed us that even though she is young, she can make a difference in the world. After this we had lunch, then presented our showcase about Peace Week. It was amazing to talk to others, even people older than us and share our ideas with them so they can bring Peace week to their schools and communities. Then we went to two more workshops, and dinner. Lastly we went to the Monuments by Moonlight tour with some students from a school in Pennsylvania. During this conference I have gotten closer to all my classmates and even got to meet new friends from around the United States and from around the world. I learned that if I'm passionate about a subject I can use this subject to help others, which also helps me grow as a person. I will never forget the conference because I learned the youth is not only our future leaders but also our leaders now."

Thank you for meeting with us! We are participating in the National Service-Learning Conference, an intergenerational event that brings together a rich diversity of youth and adults who share a commitment to improving our nation’s schools and offering young people opportunities for service and leadership. Convened by the National Youth Leadership Council for the past 25 years, over 1,500 attendees will gather in Washington, DC, this week, culminating in a Day of Service on the National Mall near the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, April 12. Please join us!

My name is Ananya Bhaktaram, from Casady School located at 9500 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Oklahoma City, OK 73120. You can contact me via email at XXX my cell phone XXX or a letter sent to address to me (Ananya Bhaktaram) and sent to Casady School.

I am currently working on a project we call 11 days of Unity. What comes to mind when you think of peace? For us at Casady, it all started with a pinwheel. That small, seemingly insignificant gesture has turned into 11 days of activism to bring awareness of our need for kindness, resourcefulness, and peaceful interactions in out community.

I remember first becoming a part of Peace Week in the 5th grade making pinwheels to plant around our campus lake on International Day of Peace (September 21st).  Had you told me that I would be here today, four years later, I probably would have scoffed at the idea, as it went in one ear and out the other. But like that little girl who grew up with a pinwheel in her hand, this project has grown. I cannot take all the credit for this. Our service director Mrs. Clay started the peace initiative with the passion to have children realize their potential. I know for a fact I
would not be the person I am today with out her, and without this project.

This past September 11th-September 21st, we hosted 11 Days of Global Unity at Casady School.  Each day represented a core topic.  The topics represented this year were Unity (9/11), Interdependence (9/12), Environment (9/13), Economic Justice (9/14), Health (9/15), Children and Teens (9/16), Women (9/17), Human Rights (9/18), Freedom (9/19), Disarmament (9/20), International Day of Peace- Day of Service (9/21). Each day allowed students to become more aware of challenges that we face here at home and that our brothers and sisters face around the globe.  Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we have been waiting for; we are the change that we seek. Peace One Day Impact of awareness of IDP http://www.peaceoneday.org/sites/default/files/peace_day_2013_results_from_peace_one_day.pdf

You can help us by joining us at home, spreading it to your friends and family, and backing our
initiative here in Washington through these pieces of legislation, which will provide the opportunity for Americans of all ages to serve and to become active participants engaged in improving their community.

Additionally, we ask for your support on the following:

Co-sponsor and support H.R.1802 - Sandra Day O'Connor Civic Learning Act of 2013 To authorize the Secretary of Education to award grants to promote civic learning and engagement, including service-learning, and for other purposes.
Co-sponsor and support H.R. 2268 - Engaging Students Through Service-Learning To amend the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 to authorize a national elementary and secondary service-learning program that promotes student achievement, and for other purposes.
Co-sponsor (or become an original co-sponsor) to amend the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 to increase academic achievement by making it easier for current funding to be used to support professional development for educators to implement service-learning aligned with instructional outcomes; build capacity for state and local education agencies; and to support evaluation to ensure best practices, knowledge of what works and areas for improvement. (H.R. XXXX or contact Rebecca Taylor in Rep. Betty McCollum’s office at 225- 6631).
Support continued funding for peer-to-peer learning strategies to increase teen driving safety and awareness through the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act Century Act (MAP-21) (Public Law 112-141)

Again, thank you for your time today and your work supporting your constituents of all ages!

Making new friends and starting a hectic, engaging schedule

Today was Capitol Hill day in DC, where we went to different government buildings, such as the Library of Congress and the office buildings of the Senators and Representatives. Sadly we were not able to meet any of the actual senators or representatives in person but we did have the privilege of speaking to the spokespeople of each representatives and senators, that represent Oklahoma. We all did agree though that there was one spokesperson that we all enjoyed talking to and sharing our ideas and thoughts on our own passions. Even though we got kind of lost looking for certain rooms, we still  had time for our group picture!

Tuesday, April 8th, Departure and Arrival in DC

Wednesday, February 9th, 2014, 1:44 AM

Yesterday was our departure day from OKC to DC. This being my first time flying in about nine years, I experienced the TSA for the first time. Our flight was delayed by about 20 minutes or so, but it was just fine. I entertained myself on the ride by reading the comic "V for Vendetta" that my friend had given me, and it is an excellent read, on par with 1984 in depicting and discussing totalitarian/fascist governments in my opinion. After our brief stop in Atlanta, we flew to DC, and made it in a reasonable time of about 10 o'clock or so. We checked into our hotel, which is just a Mariott and yet is multi-faceted (as in multiple buildings,) architecturally striking, and looks as though we are staying in a luxury hotel. This general air was corroborated when we walked about trying to find food, and we're greeted by colonial-looking, almost Bostonian apartment buildings. We ate at The Diner (not even joking, we ate at a diner named "The Diner",) and the roof had an incredibly intricate design that really fascinated me. It seems to me that every single nook and cranny of DC has culture and art packed into it.

Tomorrow we shall be meeting with Representatives/Senators, talking about Service-Learning and other issues important to us. We're all very excited for the conference and what we will be taking away from it. We reflected (admittedly via text, but regardless) about it, and the general consensus was that we were all looking forward to learning new ideas, especially how to better advocate the ideals of peace. Today was a relaxing prelude, and tomorrow is going to be a fun opening to representing our school. I am excited beyond measure. But for now, it's 2 AM and I am extremely tired. DC, prepare yourself.

Sunday, April 13
We will be heading to the airport at 10:00 am via shuttle.  Our plane leaves at noon and we are expecting an arrival to OKC at 4:45 PM.  Turner will be taking a later plane.
Miranda is the reflector of the day and I am looking forward to her blog entry.
It has been a great trip.  Our Cyclone Peace Team made us proud.  Today, during breakfast, I should know what their next steps are and I am excited about the possibilities.  We will add pictures tomorrow.

Saturday April 12
Today is the Cherry Blossom Festival at the same place as the Global Youth Service Day. It should be an amazing experience.  We have not had time to upload pictures, but we will try tomorrow after we come back from volunteering and museum, the last two items in our agenda.  Claire is to provide the blog entry for today.  Looking forward to her thoughts about the day.  -Carmen Clay
Friday, April 11
I cannot believe our trip will be over soon.  Parents, please make arrangements to pick-up your child at the airport Sunday, April 13.  The flight number is Air Tram 498 and we should be arriving to OKC @ 4:13 PM.  It is a connecting fly coming from Atlanta. We have a full day ahead of conference workshops, a second day of showcase and the kids will be visiting the National Art Gallery while I stay to tear down our showcase and attend the final plenary.  The kids are excited about using the subway in DC.  Ananya will be visiting family.  We will also have a good by dinner with the friends we have made.
I look forward to Ananya's blog entry and the way she will reflect their first conference.  For the next three year, the home of the National Service-Learning Conference will be DC.  Hope we will have the opportunity to come with a bigger team and more teachers.  -Carmen Clay

Thursday, April 10th

Today was showcase day and the first full day of conference presentations.  The kids and Mr. Bush were amazing. I am very proud of service-learning Cyclones

We have not been able to figure out how to upload pictures from the IPAD yet.
We also had a tour of monuments by moonlight. I am looking forward to Cathy's blog entry and reflection.

MONEY MATTERS
Reimbursement to service learning, charged to Casady Visa.  Please bring cash or send check to the business office, to Mrs. Melissa Jenkins at Blaik Hall or to me.

1. Round Trip from and to airport: Executive Shuttle: $30 per person:  Turner, Ananya

2. Monuments by Moonlight ticket: Cost was $35 per person.  $25 came from plane ticket which when booked was $25 cheaper.  We charged the group's fee for Monuments by Moonlight to Service-Learning, therefore every member of the group owed an extra $10 per person.
Turner  ($35), Ananya ($10)

3. Registration to Conference and share of hotel: $275 Turner , $495 Turner.

We registered at Barnes and Noble.  Please bring a copy of your registration with you since the receipt was sent to your e-mails and I do not have a copy of your registration.  The copy is important because it speeds up the process to get your registration materials and badge.  You have to be very careful with your badge because it allows you to enter the Exhibit Hall and other venues.  If you misplace it, to replace it you will have to pay a fee.  In the past it was $10.

Entire Group:  Sunday Breakfast.  $15-20 per person will include the tax and tip.

Documents Needed
Permission to travel and releases

7th Meeting 3/31/2014  Chapel and Lunch

Pending to do

Color the presentation: Done.

Order business cards: Johnny took care of this

Bring $30: Share of the round trip transportation from the airport and hotel.  Only Miranda provided the $30.

Some members owe other money like $10 for share of lights tour and registration to the conference $247.  We are trying to avoid extra work for the business office.  If money is not brought, the business office will bill through "book billing" and the money will come from the depleted service-learning budget.

If interested in the Congressional Award for Service, go to the site  http://congressionalaward.org/index.php and pay your $10 to start your file before we attend the conference.  All the hours spent in preparing for the conference apply for your expedition and exploration area.  Ananya completed the registration

Ananya sent a preliminary letter representing us for our day at Capitol Hill DC, but if we all take time this week to write our own and e-mail a give copy of our personal thoughts to her (copy me too please), she will be not only deliver her voice, but ours.  Mine is almost finished.  Here is the link of the example and the template as well as the pdf of guidelines to our day at the Hill

Decide what day you will blog on this link so we can keep parents, YAC, Youth LEAD OKC, and the after school care program updated on what we are doing while in DC.

Do final touches to presentation.  Ananya sent a request for Tuesday (B-block-Chapel-Lunch) to finish the presentation.

6th Meeting: Peace Week Showcase A-Z: Sunday, March 30, 1 -4 Wing

Thanks to Miranda's leadership, (she organized the presentation and kept the group focused on task), the feature presentation is almost completed.

The Peace Week Team divided the task by days and everyone filled in their pages with what Casady did, what they personally were involved promoting  and/or through the year and what they would like to promote.

After 3 hours of work, Ananya sent an e-mail requesting time during chapel, b-block, and lunch to finish the presentation on Tuesday.  Team members took their assignments home to finish tracing the preliminary information.  The final touches with special markers etc, will take place hopefully Tuesday, if permission is granted by pertinent administrators.

Special thanks to Claire for performing RAK on us.  We had delicious, healthy snacks.  Mrs. Clay will pay back the Admissions office for the 6 bottles of water we took.

Johnny made Peace Team Business Card and requested feedback from the team to have group consensus.  We will order the cards on Monday.

Mrs. Clay worked on her part of the presentation which is a folder with the slides of the PP @ https://docs.google.com/a/casady.org/presentation/d/18k2vcD11EC0SVHmFup132QKkPk2W-iyKcbyWRoMut8U/present?slide=id.p.  No internet connection available at Showcase Exhibit Hall in DC.  The showcased projects are available at any time the Exhibit Hall is opened.  The conference has requested the Casady Peace Team t showcase its presentation for a couple of hours on April 10 and 11.  We are on duty from 12-2:00

Mrs. Clay is responsible of supplies for the pinwheel giveaway:  pens or golf pencils, thumb tacks, and post-it notes.

Anaya also sent an e-mail to Mrs. Hubert to see if she can make a smaller Peace Sign to place in the middle of the table.

The After School Care asked the Peace Team to take their drawings of what Women Can and Cannot Do as well as their drawing of Freedom to Mrs. Obama through her entourage since she is the honorary chair of the Global Youth Service Day which will take place in DC on April 12.  Mrs. Clay will share the s-l petitions that Anaya is presenting during Hill Day and ask the little ones to write a letter about the proposed bills.

Congressional Award for Service: http://congressionalaward.org/index.php

The Congressional Award for Service  http://congressionalaward.org/index.php  was recommended to be explored.  The team is doing everything needed to have the Conference as an exploration activity for the bronze medal.

4th planning meeting, Wing Sunday, March 9, 1-3 PM

Goal:  Finalize plans on who is doing what, what supplies are needed and create a calendar with 03/11 as a date to make final decisions regarding restaurants and sites to visit as well as workshops to attend.

Drawing by Claire shows what the showcase will look like at the National Service-Learning Conference in DC.  We will be competing for attention with 76+ projects including our own, Fair Trade Chocolate Project.  Every member has a part which include promoting how they were connected to peace weeks in the past, including 2013 and what their personal passion focus will be in 2014 connected to a theme of the 11 days of global unity (9/11-9/21).  The final product will be ready after the March 30 meeting due to Spring Break.  Students will bring all their personal needed supplies to the March meeting.  If they need to purchase supplies, they will bring receipts for reimbursement.

Mrs. Clay will have a folder with all the activities Casady has done for informational purposes.  Instead of a brochure, onlookers will be provided with a business card with links to this blog which will provide them with details, resources and videos.

Participants:  Claire, Miranda and Turner were unable to attend.  Meeting started a little bit late because we could not find a place to gather.  Johnny, Ananya (will send her notes of the meeting), Cathy and Carmen.

1. Register for Evening Tour:  The group chose Thursday!

2. Place DC sites on schedule: Saturday afternoon: Holocaust Museum.  Other sites will fit in schedule after we know what workshops and projects we want to do.  All the museums are free, we just need to find time in the schedule.  We want to visit at least one of the Smithsonian sites, we just need to do more research since the visits to that museum sites can take a week.  The cherry blossoms we will  be schedule das we know where the best locations are.

Funding for transportation to all sites is a personal expense we need to be ready to assume individually.  We did not talk about restaurants, but decided that we will meet at school during lunch and b-block from now on.  The group needs to decide a day.  Mrs. Clay will talk to coach T so she can bring lunch to the Wing from Calvert.  We will also do communicating via e-mail or meetup.com.  We could be in our homes working in our computers working on the presentation together.

3. Plan DC Showcase of Peace Week 2013 and brainstorm plan for PW 2014

Mrs. Clay explained this blog with great detail because this is the source of information to start planning the showcase.  Then, we began to brainstorm ideas.

a. Time line with pictures of the 11 days of unity

b. Cloth wall to leave thoughts if our table is placed by a wall!  Mrs. Clay will contact conference organizers

c. Peace sign for people to leave thumb prints. Mrs. Clay will contact Mrs. Huber.  Peacemaker sign is also another option.  We are also considering making small pinwheels on site for people to leave one for us and take one with them.

d. Johnny thinks people should leave with a flyer or brochure about the week so schools can replicate it with ease if desired.

e. Mrs. Clay would like to have a banner that brings people to explore the table with a logo for the week that is easy to spot and inspires them to look at what we are offering as a possibility for them to replicate and our ideas for future Peace Weeks.

d. TO DO:  Create a logo for the week to be shared at next meeting...Meeting will be in two weeks lunch and b-block to have time to finalize the way we will showcase presentation in DC and what roles each of us will have.
4. Be part of the IKT or be a RAKtivist next week http://casadypeaceweek.blogspot.com/p/rak-random-intentional-acts-of-kindness.html Mrs. Clay provided handouts!
5. Multicultural Institute Presentation, March 1, morning-UPDATE:  None of the team members present will attend, conflicts with other schedules.  If Miranda. Claire AND/OR can attend, it will be great.  Serenne from Youth Lead is also considering attending and explaining what she did for Peace Day at Boys and girls club meeting and with Youth Lead in July 2013.  She is also designing a logo for the week.  Mrs. Clay will know if we are selected to present Monday, 2/10/2014.

Meeting adjourned at 3:00 PM
