Oklahoma City Myriad Gardens Site of the first OKC Friendship Walk
Celebrating the United Nations International Day of Peace which occurs on a yearly basis on 9/21

The first OKC Friendship Walk will be on Saturday, September 24th, 2pm, at the Myriad Gardens in Oklahoma City. The walk will be a part of the Turkish Festival, and it will demonstrate the rich diversity of Oklahoma's communities as well as our commitment to building a culture of peace and friendship. It will commemorate the International Day of Peace (9/21) as proclaimed by the General Assembly of the United Nations.

Everyone is invited to participate -- there is no charge for admission to the festival, and the only requirement for walkers is to maintain a positive attitude and a peaceful demeanor. Flags, signs, banners are welcome, as well as expressions of support for the sustainable development of our planet in a global culture of peace. We might also offer a special word of encouragement to the people of Turkey who are suffering from the erosion of human and civil rights in their country. Peace, freedom, and human rights go hand in hand.

The Myriad Gardens will promote the events through their social media kits.

Walk speakers: Sinead Maguina... will introduce the speakers and give instructions to the walkers.   The Executive Director of Myriad Garden Foundation Maureen Heffernan (405) 445-7081 mheffernan@myriadgardens.org and  Kuaybe Basturk ... Interfaith Dialog Institute , and Aamr Hasanjee ... International Students Association, UCO will welcome the walkers.

OKC Friendship Walk Board Meeting Minutes
by Bill Bryant, United Nations Association of Greater Oklahoma, Communication Director

To the Planning Team for
International Day of Peace
September, 2016 -- Metro OKC

Please join our next planning session. It will be:

Wednesday, August 10th -- 6pm
Raindrop Turkish House
4444 N. Classen Blvd
Oklahoma City, OK   73118

At our meeting on July 27th were: Kadir and Enes from the Raindrop Turkish House, Kuaybe Basturk (the new director of the Dialog Institute), Moses & Sadie Mast, Priya Desai, Joan Korenblit, Sinead Maguina, Steve McLinn, Michelle Rodriguez, Richard White, Bill Bryant, and Carmen Clay (via telephone).

We enjoyed a wonderful spread of delicious food. The people of the Raindrop Turkish House are famous for their hospitality, and we appreciate them so much!

Getting down to business, we reviewed plans for our Friendship Walk. It will be on Saturday, September 24th, 2pm, at the Myriad Gardens in Oklahoma City. The walk will be a part of the Turkish Festival, and it will demonstrate the rich diversity of Oklahoma's communities as well as our commitment to building a culture of peace and friendship. It will commemorate the International Day of Peace as proclaimed by the General Assembly of the United Nations.

We're inviting everyone to participate -- there is no charge for admission to the festival, and the only requirement for walkers is to maintain a positive attitude and a peaceful demeanor. Flags, signs, banners are welcome, as well as expressions of support for the sustainable development of our planet in a global culture of peace. I think we might also offer a special word of encouragement to the people of Turkey who are suffering from the erosion of human and civil rights in their country. Peace, freedom, and human rights go hand in hand.

To begin our walk, we will have several spoken messages. Speakers will include:

Kuaybe Basturk ... Dialog Institute
Aamr Hasanjee ... International Students Association, UCO
Maureen Hefferman ... Executive Director of the Myriad Gardens

Sinead Maguina agreed to speak as well. She will introduce the speakers and give instructions to the walkers.

Flute and drum will be provided by Steve McLinn and (we hope) Albert Gray Eagle.

Should we have another speaker at the conclusion of the walk? I don't know. It's just a thought. Plans are still developing. At our next meeting we will certainly want to develop our action plan for outreach and publicity. Please plan to join us!

A big "Thank You!" to Kadir for reaching out to the Myriad Gardens on our behalf.

Join us on the 10th, and we'll take the next steps forward.

I hope to see you then!

--Bill

9/24 UN Peace Day awareness walk

To the Planning Team for
International Day of Peace
September, 2016 -- Metro OKC

Please join our next planning session. It will be:

Wednesday, July 27th -- 6pm
Raindrop Turkish House
4444 N. Classen Blvd
Oklahoma City, OK   73118

At our meeting on June 22nd were: Baush, Michelle, Noel, Joan, Larry, Bill.

At the time we met last month, we were not yet certain that our request to stage a march (parade) at the Turkish Festival would be approved by the folks who manage the Myriad Gardens.

Ersin was going to make the request, and he was willing to recommend that the request be approved. But, Ersin was not able to give us a report on that item. He was absent from the meeting. Since then, we have learned that Ersin has moved to Houston -- which is a great loss for our community here in OKC, but the move will offer greater opportunities for Ersin and his family. We wish him the best of luck!

At any rate, when we re-convene, we will get an update on our request to organize a march / parade / friendship walk. I guess we can also talk about the name we want to give to our activity. Carmen Clay has suggested that it should be called a "friendship walk." I like that idea. I'm feeling a particular sympathy these days for the people of Turkey -- especially in light of the recent crackdown on teachers and university officials.

We also brainstormed a list of people who might be invited to deliver a message of peace at the festival. Among those mentioned: Robert Henry, Don Betz, Jason Dunnington, Stephanie Bice, Rep. George Young, a representative of international students in Oklahoma, a representative of the Raindrop Turkish House. More on this when we meet again.

Join us on the 27th, and we'll take the next steps forward.

Project Ideas

If we all do one random act of kindness daily, we just might set the world in the right direction. ~ Martin Kornfeld

Global Youth Murals

ART IS A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE

The 2016 Global Youth Murals theme has been announced, and updated guidelines are available! Please note that murals are accepted throughout the year and that murals can be submitted anytime.

Global Youth Murals allow K-12 students, ages 4-18, from around the world to express their unique global perspective through art. This year’s theme, Global Bridges, encourages students to share with us the ways they think individuals and groups build bridges around the world and how others can follow their example. To be considered for an award, submissions should arrive at PTPI World Headquarters in Kansas City no later than October 30. Additional information, including instructions for creating the murals, is available in our Global Youth Mural guidelines.
For inspiration, you may wish to visit our online gallery of murals, which includes images of the 2015 winners and honorable mentions. Note cards, featuring 12 Global Youth Murals from around the world, are also available for purchase.

PTPI invites our chapters to host an exhibit of the Global Youth Murals. You can find more information in the Murals on Tour Chapter Guide. To register your chapter to host murals in your community, click here.

Chapel Speakers and performances tentative schedule proposal for Father Blizzard
9/21 Peace Day:                  Wednesday:  UD Chapel Orchestra
9/20 Disarmament Day:         Tuesday:      UD Chapel Choir
9/19 Freedom Day:                Monday:       Judy and Josh

Speakers being explored for other chapels  9/12 -9/16
National Memorial and Museum speakers: The Education Coordinator, Mrs. Lynn Porter was contacted on 5/29/2016.  She has been able to provide incredible chapel speakers in the past.   Mrs. Porter will be re-contacted in July for speakers for all chapels.  She felt that she could provide age appropriate speakers.

Another source is the Respect Diversity Foundation Bureau of Speakers http://therespectdiversityfoundation.org/

Mrs. Clay also sent an e-mail to Sam Presti's press agent on May 25/2016.  Sam Presti was a 9/11/2015 speaker and we will love to have him back.  Mr. Presti is the manager of the Oklahoma City Thunder and main promoter of the Oklahoma City Standard, One act of Kindness, Honor, and Service sponsored by the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum.  Update:  We need to be flexible with Mr. Presti schedule and re contact his agent in August.

Another possible speaker is Thunder player Serge Ibaka born in Congo, Africa and a Spanish citizen.  See what PEACE ONE DAY is trying to accomplish in Africa in the area of Peace with the sponsorship of Warren Buffett.  Update:  Mr. Ibaka was transferred to another team in June.

Brief Introduction of Peace One Day- Worked to institutionalized IPD@ UN

Peace One Day Great Lakes Campaign in collaboration with Warren Buffett

9/24 OKC UN Celebration of International Day of Peace  Connections to YAC and YLOKC.  A small group of volunteers is working on connecting the Turkish Festival (4,000 people attended last year) to a UN/OKC raising awareness, advocacy and celebration of the International Day of Peace 9/21 on 9/24.  The Peace/ Friendship Walk/Parade will be at the Myriad Gardens.  Time: TBD yet.

The  Casady YAC Peace Team connection MAY BE with walkers with signs and pinwheels raising awareness of UN Peace Day-Peace One Day, and the 11 Days of Global Unity.  The  YAC theme and the evolving YAC Peace Week WHY?  Unifying different backgrounds into one peaceful community ( Environment-Unity in Diversity-Participating in the community to improve lives-Going Beyond Co-Existence) align very well with the UN IDP OKC Walk.
Jeremy Gilley on Skype with Casady YAC Peace Team 2015

The Casady Peace Team may also want to consider bringing a t-shirt design to the attention of UN IDP OKC planning team at the next meeting.  Coca Cola is one of the sponsoring businesses of Peace ONE Day -organization that institutionalized the IDP at the UN. Jeremy Gilley, its founder has been our inspiration for many years.  Other possible sponsors could be the businesses from the Asian District, the organizing entities of the walk, and multicultural and civic OKC clubs promoting peace, like the Respect Diversity Foundation, the Oklahoma Conference of Churches, the Rotary Club, the Lions Club, the Asia Society of Oklahoma, the Latino Community Development Agency,  The goal will be to give away or at minimal cost environmentally friendly inspirational t-shirts at the walk and the entire Casady community participating in the 11 Days of Global Unity Activities from 9/11-9/21, our PEACE WEEK.

The Casady music and art departments will be contacted to see if they could help with inspirational posters  and banners for the walk as well as musicians cheering the walkers and performances of peace/multicultural pieces at the end of the walk.
