Before 9/11: After School Care learned about Peace Stone Soup and the power they had in creating a velvet or sandpaper environment in their class or home by their words and actions.

11 DAYS OF GLOBAL UNITY  -  PEACE WEEK


On 9/11, 2013 UNITY: I will do a good deed: Children encouraged teens to do a good deed this day and throughout the year.  YAC provided thank you goodies for firefighters, promoted writing sincere letters of appreciation to teachers and mentors.  A freshman table at Calvert, our dinning hall, hosted "Jack Pot Bingo Winners" from a neighboring independent living facility, Statesman's Club.

Casady Service-Learning Blog promoted being part of the IKT(International Kindness Team-Secrets Agents of Compassion.  After School Care took a little ownership of this project.  We have to be more intentional in 2014.

On 9/12 and 9/13 INTERDEPENDENCE & ENVIRONMENT: After School Care children encouraged teens to respond to the question, How are humans and the environment interdependent?  The Green Team at Boys and Girls Club provided 60 trees for Casady teachers to consider planting on 9/21.  The Club members contacted the Forestry Department who donated the seedlings collaborating with the Eno Programme goal of planting 100 million trees by 2017. http://vimeo.com/20974508

On 9/14 and 9/15 ECONOMIC JUSTICE AND HEALTH DAYS:  The Casady Service-Learning Program encouraged Cyclones to serve at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, Boys and Girls Club.  Our Chaplains had peace walks around our beautiful lake.  A teacher/Chef provided a link to Recipeace to have intentional peace conversations around a meal table.

Connections to Peace Week Themes (Economic Justice and Health)

Connecting to Peace Team goals, in October 2013, the Casady YAC sponsored a Food Drive benefiting the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.  In January 2014, Casady Service-Learning in collaboration with Casady YAC sponsored a day of service at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.  The Casady parents promoted a Food, Funding and toiletry Drive for the Guild of Saint George to Slay the Dragon of Poverty helping needy Oklahomans who are assisted by the Episcopal Guild.

The Lower Division Third Grade Team had an advocacy/fundraising project in their curriculum in the Spring.  Students learned about fair trade, chocolate production, sold chocolate bars and allocated proceeds by percentages to non-profit organizations they investigated during class.  The Fair Trade Chocolate Project was featured at the National Service Learning Conference in DC by Mr. Jeff Bush


Finally, the Lower Division had Jump Rope for Heart in the month of January.

On 9/16 and 9/17 CHILDREN, YOUTH AND WOMEN DAYS:  The Middle Division students wrote characteristics of peacemakers in a gigantic sign make by art teacher, Melody Huber. 





The Casady Service-Learning Program started to promote the second training for Youth LEAD OKC which took place in October, on Make a Difference Day.  http://youthleadokc.blogspot.com/

UD YAC students in collaboration with drama teacher, Mr. Tim Crafton started a peer to peer education following theater of the oppressed tenants addressing awareness of what are the forms of bullying in our school during a chapel service.  The end result was eye-opening.

YAC chairs promoted ice breakers to get to know each other better during meetings.

The Lower Division students made and signed pledges not to tolerate bullying in their classrooms. 

Mr. Crofton's drama 7th and 8th grade classes prepared skits, PIECES OF PEACE, which they performed during our chapel services.

The after school care program continued their awareness raising campaign through visual arts creating posters of the 11 Days of Global Unity.

UD choir sang an inspirational song at UD Chapel.  Choir teachers from all divisions helped raise awareness of the International Day of Peace focusing on peace songs and featuring their choirs at all chapels.

From November to December, Casady YAC collected items for YWCA and made care packages to help the Women's Shelter.  In March 2014, Casady Service-Learning blogs raised awareness of Women's Month.  From November 2013-August 2014 YAC embraced "doing something" to help Children's Hospital.  In December, YAC chairs delivered homemade and decorated Xmas Stockings.  In February, YAC chairs delivered Valentine placemats.  YAC chairs also had a diaper drive for Infant Crisis Services in the month of January in collaboration with the basketball teams of two rival schools in sports but partners in service: Casady and Heritage Hall. In February, a YAC chair promoted care packages for Positive Tomorrows during Random Acts of Kindness Week.

Today's girls will be the women of tomorrow: and if a girl is educated, her value to her family, her community and their economic well-being is proven to increase. One extra year in school alone will increase a woman's lifetime income by at least 10%. The video was available at all Casady service-learning blogs on 12 March.  We did not participate on the Google Hangout Girls with Books and why they are the New Global Power - where A World at School and girls' education advocates from around the world shared ideas.

National Volunteer Week Connections to Peace Week
In March, for National Volunteer Week, YAC had a screening of Girl Rising for the whole school on a Saturday.  YAC also screened one of the stories during a regular meeting at B-block.  


On 9/18 and 9/19 HUMAN RIGHTS AND FREEDOM DAYS:  The Casady Service-Learning Program promoted Youth for Human Rights videos via blogs.

The after school program children created a freedom flag with their names as the stars because with velvet over sandpaper words and actions they become guardians of freedom for everyone.






Peace Week Connection

In February 2014, our Dean of Students, administrators, Vicars, and teens of  diverse ethnic backgrounds raise awareness of Black History Month.  The UD Multicultural Club also raised awareness of Zambia, Africa.  The Middle Division International Club sold food from around the world.



9/20 DISARMAMENT DAY was PEACE DAY @ CASADY SCHOOL.  Students from all divisions planted pinwheels -our weapon of disarmament- on a giant peace sign in front of chapel.  Mr. Tim Crofton, Drama Teacher, conducted peace reflective activities in LD, MD, and UD chapels. 

The PD blessed their pinwheels, sang a peace song and send bubbles with their thoughts of peace to the heavens.


 



















In the evening, YAC/Youth LEAD OKC teens participated in the Pinwheels for Peace Festival at OCU by distributing pinwheels made by Casady students and Six Billion Paths to Peace to participants and audience.



9/21: PEACE DAY: KIDS PEACE CARNIVAL: Youth LEAD OKCasady co-hosted a school supplies give away and peace fair with students from OU and OCU at Boys and Girls Club.  The goal was to promote International Day of peace and Who will you make peace with? at the Fair.  Youth LEAD OKC Casady was joined by YLOKCMercy and YLOKCDouglas. 


Casady Service-Learning Program promoted the PEACE ONE DAY Global Truce 2013, Who will you make peace with in 2013? via blog and with chapel videos introduced by YAC Executive Board Chairs.  The Peace One Day Concert was broadcast live at the Boys and Girls Club volunteers' room.




























9/22:  INTERFAITH YOUTH TOUR: Youth LEAD OKCasady teens facilitated the reflective component of the Oklahoma Conference of Churches, Interfaith Youth Tour.
