FOREWORD FROM JEREMY GILLEY
There is so much to tell you about this month.
Today marks the 6-month countdown to Peace Day 2016; always an important milestone in the calendar, and we have exciting news about Peace One Day’s plans for 2016 to share with you.
Firstly, we are delighted to announce that this year’s Peace One Day Youth Celebration will take place in Kampala, Uganda, on 21 September. This celebration aims to bring the youth of Uganda and the Great Lakes region together to call for lasting peace in the region and beyond. As part of this unique moment young peacemakers will share their stories, films will be shown and dancers and musicians from the region will come together to celebrate our global day of peace. Maurice Kirya (Uganda) will headline the Celebration alongside other special guests from the Great Lakes region and beyond. In a symbolic grand finale, all artists will come together to perform live “One”, the Coca-Cola Peace Anthem written by Zwai Bala.
Last year, “One” was premiered live on Peace Day in Kigali, Rwanda. Today, we are releasing the music video for “One” featuring the 2015 Celebration as well as inspiring footage from Peace Day activities that took place in the Great Lakes last year. Click here to see Peace Day in action.
We are also very excited to share with you another brand new film. Our campaign in the Great Lakes region of Africa, made possible by the kind support of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, is now in its 3rd year. We’ve met so many inspiring people there who have committed their lives to peacebuilding in their homes, schools and wider communities. Please check out our new film here, showcasing the passion and dedication of the people of the region to mark Peace Day.
Finally, in the last few days we have held the first of many Peace One Day Youth Rallies in Kampala, Uganda (click here to view photos), bringing young people together from across the country to engage in exciting dialogue and activities in preparation for Peace Day 2016. The young people participating show us that Peace Day is working. More Peace One Day Youth Rallies will be held in the coming months around the Great Lakes region of Africa.
Remember, it is never too early to start planning, reaching out and spreading the message of Peace Day to you friends, family, colleagues and community. If we work together we can build peace one day.
In peace, etc.
In peace,
Jeremy Gilley
